What is Altere, in plain terms?
Altere is a Windows desktop assistant: a floating panel plus global shortcuts. You dictate or transform text in any app, save professional context, chat with that knowledge, manage tasks in Organize, and optionally use WhatsApp, with paste-back to the app you were using.
Transcribe vs Action vs Chat: what’s the difference?
Transcribe pastes what you said as text. Action runs your speech (and optional selection) through AI and pastes the transformed result. Chat fills the assistant so you can talk to your knowledge instead of pasting. You can switch Transcribe and Action while recording.
How fast is transcription, and does speech leave my PC?
Expect near-instant transcription for everyday dictation: hold, speak, paste. You choose where speech is recognized. On-device Parakeet keeps dictation local. Cloud transcription via Altere or your own provider is available too. A dictionary corrects names and terms automatically.
How do documents become searchable? Are screenshots OCR’d?
Point a category at files or folders (PDF, DOCX, spreadsheets, markdown, and more). Native text is extracted first; scanned or image-heavy pages can use on-device OCR at a quality you pick. Region and action screenshots are for clipboard, history, or vision in the model. They are not OCR’d into text knowledge.
What are Quick Actions?
Named prompt presets for transforms: fix tone, summarize, custom instructions, and more. Run them from the selection peak, F1-F12 for the first twelve active ones, or freeform. Outcomes paste back, open chat, or both.
What is Organize?
Your task surface: Today (with an undated Inbox), calendar, filtered tasks, and a board. Create tasks yourself or from chat/voice. Reminders can show on Peak and, when connected, WhatsApp.
Can I use my own AI providers?
On Complete, yes. Assign models per role (chat, actions, context, WhatsApp, embeddings, transcription): Altere’s catalog, a catalog provider with your key, or a custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Where does my knowledge live?
Captures, categories, documents, and tasks stay on your machine. License checks, usage metrics for quotas, and the AI calls you initiate leave the device. With your own keys, content goes to that provider under their policy. Altere does not store those chats.
How does WhatsApp fit in?
Link a dedicated bot and allowlist controller phones. Allowed threads share the same knowledge and tasks as desktop (separate conversation threads). Reminders can notify on Peak or WhatsApp.
Transcription or Complete?
Transcription is for dictation-first use (near-instant STT, history, screenshots). Complete unlocks Action mode, Quick Actions, Context, documents, chat, Organize, providers, and WhatsApp. Most people who want lasting work memory should start with Complete. Both are free during beta.
When are macOS and Linux coming?
Windows is first. macOS is on the roadmap after the Windows beta is solid; Linux follows.
